I had quite a shock last night, but not as big as my husband’s. He nearly chocked to death on a piece of curried chicken. He couldn’t yell out for help because his wind-pipe was blocked. He did a kind of controlled panic dance, trying to show me what to do.
To tell the truth, I had no idea. Well, I did, but everything I thought of was wrong. Like, have a drink of water (can push the obstruction down even further), slap him on his back (same problem), and so on. What was needed was a very strong abdominal hug from behind. That doesn’t always work either, but this time, it did. The piece of chicken came flying out of his throat.
He told me later that he had a maximum of three minutes left to live unless his airways were cleared. I know this is not a common occurrence, but it does happen. Would you know what to do?
